Looks like a "E" grill to me.

So I have measures this many times and I keep coming up with 13.5 mm. X 11 and 14x 17 points. Is there something else to determine for sure?

Dear all in this forum and especially in this topic,
I hope you all doing well.
I just registered here as I recently found a couple of
very old and interesting US stamps. One of them caught
my full attention as I figured out, that there are lots of
discussions about it.
Interesting is also that the last "E" in "Three" looks like a "B".
It's the probably 1867 Washington grilled stamp.
I have pictures attached.

I appreciate any comment and help on it.
I tried to make clean pics as possible.

Thanks a lot and have a great day, Alex

Hope this is the correct topic.
Today I received an 85C from Kelleher's most recent US auction.
Checking the supposed "Z" grill out I count 15 by 18 points, and 12 by 14 mm.
The number of points is okay with Scott, but the 12 mm width matches the Scott definition of a "D" grill.
The other difference between a "Z" and a "D" grill is the orientation of the "points". "D" grills have vertical ridges for points. "Z" grills have horizontal ridges.
I can't tell if this stamp has vertical or horizontal ridges.
Please take a look.

Always better to count the points as opposed to measuring.

I see a couple points that appear to have vertical ridges. If so it's a D grill. Maybe try to get a better image. Turn off all lights in the room except one and illuminate the stamp from the side to create shadows on the stamp.

I can see 15 columns, and the points aren't horizontal, so it's a D Grill. #85 is a nice stamp, but nowhere near the value or the rarity of an 85C.

thank you, Ray, and Risney. I agree about the vertically oriented points. Talked with Kelleher about the problem. Have returned the item, asking for review by expertising agency.

this is an update of my previous post about an 85C obtained from Kelleher. It finally returned from Kelleher along with a cert from PF. The cert says it is an 85C.
But look at the front of the stamp. The vertical grill impressions are painfully obvious.
I welcome your comments on what I should do at this point. Argue with PF that it should be the lesser value item???
