Roller cancels don't seem overly popular, but can anyone tell me what is? PALMERVILLE? Thanks again!

I would take a stab at Somerville. One in New Brunswick. One in Ontario. One in Alberta. I can find an old name of Palmerville in B.C. but do not know if it associated with a Post Office.

I think I see an ONT in the second line. The only match I can find is Summerville, Ontario.

If you goggle " Somerville Ont. " there may be something in one of the links. Not sure if it could fit properly in your cancel or not.

Cheers Bill

There never was a postoffice named Somerville in Alberta (source: Post Offices of Alberta, by Robinson), nor in Ontario (source: Ontario Post Offices by Smith). There is a reference to one in Nova Scotia in 1879 only, but there are no records of it.

The only one was in New Brunswick from 1866 to 1916. It closed due to the introduction of Rural Free Delivery, so was a very small post office. Annual revenues were less than $20 from 1891 to 1900. They were higher in some other years, but never reached $100. It is unlikely such a small office had a roller cancel. This is supported by Post Offices of New Brunswick 1783-1930 by MacManus which does not list a roller cancel for this office (but does for many others.)

Since your cancel can't be Somerville, I believe that it must be Summerville. (This also fits better into the cancel.) Possible Summervilles are in Prince Edward Island (open 1867-1967), Nova Scotia (open 1866 to after 1982) and Ontario (open 1861 - 1961).

Based on the ONT I see under the name, my conclusion is that your cancel is from Summerville, Ontario.

Thanks to everyone for offering their thoughts. Is there a roller cancel resource that anyone knows about?

I am assuming now that this is a 8 bar roller with ONT below the town. The…MERVILLE is readily apparent. Second letter is an A. So, it seems likely that this would be _A_MERVILLE ONT. not listed in the LAC database. SOMERVILLE just doesn't seem to fit…

Happy new year!
