Hi all,

I need some help with some New Zealand Fiscals. I have a few pages of fiscals, most with trimmed perfs and foiled to the slick parchment paper. I'm not an expert by any means on these and they just happened into my collection recently. I really love them because the concept of using the foil is really quite cool. My general question is...for scott values trimming the perfs and affixing to the parchment with foil reduces the value or is this desirable? Am I correct that the law offices typically cut the perfs off to reduce the chance of the stamp hanging up in sorting and transit and the foil helped secure them even more?

My more important question is that I have 3 stamps that have no catalogue value, as denoted by the famous dashed line in Scott because they don't have enough transactional data to calculate the value. Specifically, I think that I have AR20, 21 and 25 (the 2, 3 and 5 pounds) and one of the 5 lb stamps is loose and and still has the perfs, which seems exciting to me. Since Scott has no value, are there any experts who can point me to a valuation of these stamps, assuming that I identified them correctly?

5 lb stamp

That is a heavy one. Although not completely incorrect, the coin equaled a pound of silver in value once, it is a currency unit and not a weight. If you want to use a symbol, £5 is the usual way to denote the value.

the 1866 stamps, these come imperforate.

1867
Absolutely not.
The perforations were often ineffective, (and to save space on vellum documents) the perforations were frequently separated by scissors. (Ugh!)
Such stamps are worth less than the prices for fully perforate stamps.

Please supply the perforation guage of the £5 Blue
(Not a specialist) I can only see 2 x £5 blue (1880 and 1882)
Around £3 each year 2000

Prices for Fiscal cancels, postal cancellations attract higher prices.

The £3 Green maybe Barefoot #254 1882
Wmk NZ and Star Perf 12.5 or 14

Again around £3 each

The foil prevents re-use and affords security to the document.
Information exists on these in Stanley Gibbons Part 1

Jarnipman,

Dave Elsmore provides a very useful site dedicated to perfins and revenue stamps (among others).

If you scroll down to 1880 on the page linked below, you will see his values for your stamps:

Thanks everyone, I knew there would be a lot of information here. Dave's website is amazing! I have a ton of these so I'll get back with perf info once I sort through them.
