This bond ($1000 for the Cincinnati and Springfield Railway Company), from the 1890s, has three Revenue Stamped paper impressions. One is the $1 RN-W2, and the two others are the RN-P5. Each of these impressions are listed in Scott with a value on document (RN-W2 $85, RN-P5 $45). Is the stamped impressions catalog valuation the sum of these ($175), or just the highest value ($85)?

What I am trying to understand is the value enhancement (to compare to catalog value) based on:
a) base case of single impression on small simple document (CV reference)
b) enhancement of having 3 instead of 1
c) Large, ornate document

I understand that valuation can be somewhat of an art once an item strays from the listed conditions in the catalog, and am looking for guidance.

Well, I'm suprised I didn't think of checking the Field Guide to Revenue Stamped Paper (duh!) until now. So, I checked the Eastern Central States volume (Part 4), and lo and behold there it is in Ohio on page 58 under Certificates/bonds, the exact bond I have shown above. Priced at $75 in 1990. Soooo, I guess I would then look at the SCV in 1990, and extrapolate to the valuation now? The only other factor may be if there is a change in demand of this bond.

Eric Jackson currently has one listed for sale at $125.

But yes, pricing/valuing an RN-imprinted item starts with the catalog value then adjustments for condition, attractiveness, overall document size, noteworthy signatures, where used (territorial?), rarity of the specific form, etc., etc. It is an art more than a science.

One down-side of this particular bond is that the RN imprints are on both sides of the document and are not as displayable/exhibitable as other bonds.

Add: and there are several copies currently on Ebay ranging from $25 to $150 +tax/shipping.

Thanks John and revcollector. I would consider Eric's price to be closer to a catalog valuation, and not surprisingly, eBay is all over the map.

Also, agree about the "art", as aesthetics is part of it, and so a display that doesn't show all the revenues will not enhance the value.

So, this bond is not really scarce, so the more there are, the lower the pricing/demand.

I have a number of these, so I don't expect a high sales price when selling, especially with the multiple already out there.
