I have a set of J31P2 to J37P2 so I am told. They have a slightly faded and wrinkly appearance. Just look at the backs. Would this be typical? I have some older proofs that are sharp and look terrific. Thanks
Thanks very much for that info. When I zoom in on the three cents I can see the same crack in the plate, but the ink has not spread. I paid $105 for the lot so I think I am satisfied.
Hi again - yes, I used the term plate by mistake. These are stand alone dies. There is or was a similar set with part of the gray card attached on ebay recently. The ink from the crack runs clear across the margins like the image on stampsmarter.
Interesting! Thanks for pointing me to the ebay listing, which does indeed show the crack very nicely. In your copy, it seems that an effort was made to conceal the crack in the margins.
Yes, indeed -- the die crack on the 3¢ proof is confirmation that these are Roosevelt die proofs. Here is the 3¢ proof from the album you can view in the link that John Becker posted. This one must have been printed later, as the crack has gotten more pronounced. I would guess it didn't last much longer.
