I've seen a few cancellation marks that fit this general pattern and I was wondering if there's any history to it? Any story behind the unique design? We're bold cancellations an intentional method for trying to control reuse of stamps?

Novice in this area.
These fascinated me, when I began collecting, (still do)
I call them "Footprints"
They come with an array of letters and numbers and words.

They come as a "duplex" The CDS (circular date stamp)
Americans call them "dials"
and the footprint called the "killer"

and, as you surmise, used to cancel the stamp itself.

These devices are know as a duplex. The left part contains the postmark and the right part cancels the stamp. The number or letter in the right part indicates the postal station or service that cancelled the item.
