Fascinating. His relative, Charles Scott-Moncrieff, was the most famous Btritish translator of Proust. He also translated Stendhal.

The first line of the address appears to be Miss Scott-Moncrieff, so no first name given.

The town is Exmouth (Devon, England).

Postmark 2 Ring EXMOUTH
February 14 1848
Code 8 or 0 ? (scan is rough)

Beats the earliest known in the database by 45 years

Highest house number I can see for Beacon Hill (The Beacon?) is 21

Have to research the red receivers strike
Not seen that before.

Any accountancy marks? postage due marks ? handscripts?

It may be the red postmark is from the Chief office for unpaid letters
(happy to be corrected) FNB indicated the clerk?
C 12 N Midday strike?

Dalkeith (Midlothian) Postmark Boxed
Known 1846 - 1852

It starts with "I am sorry I hinted to you about Davie's cash account". The rest needs a better image for me with my worsening eyesight!

"Without equal" means nothing or no-one as good.
