I picked up this stamp as part of a small collection during a recent show. It looks like an 1861 Type A16 -- Sc 36B (type 2/plate 3), as I can see broken frame lines around the edges.
Something about the cancel strikes me as odd, though. The red cross is a bit too neat, and doesn't look like it's a vintage ink pen.
Is this a fake or repro stamp? Just a modern cancel over a good stamp? Something else I'm missing about the ID?

The rumor is they were cancelled this way as a means of demonetizing them prior to being given away. The term presentation copy is sometimes used. They are mentioned somewhere in the 1¢ books.
