I picked up this stamp as part of a small collection during a recent show. It looks like an 1861 Type A16 -- Sc 36B (type 2/plate 3), as I can see broken frame lines around the edges.

Something about the cancel strikes me as odd, though. The red cross is a bit too neat, and doesn't look like it's a vintage ink pen.

Is this a fake or repro stamp?
Just a modern cancel over a good stamp?
Something else I'm missing about the ID?

Any ideas or suggestions welcomed.

It is genuine. WT Crowe wrote:

All denominations of the 1857-60 set exist with either magenta or black crossed lines, most with magenta. The rumor is they were cancelled this way as a means of demonetizing them prior to being given away. The term presentation copy is sometimes used. They are mentioned somewhere in the 1¢ books. I put together a complete set of all denominations in the early 80's. In January of this year I saw a different 90¢. I would classify them as uncommon, but not rare.

Thanks for the link and info. I didn't have any luck with my searches.

I thought the cancel looked different, but I hadn't considered the 'presentation' angle.

Guess I will keep it alongside my postally used set with a note on its 'special' status.

The attached is from pages 26-27 of Neinken's book on the One-Cent 1851-57 issues.
