Hard to beat this as the first postmark of the 20th Century!
Maybe someone has one from New Zealand that might take the lead

FDS,

In 'The Cancellations of Melbourne 1861-1912' by Davies and Linfield, on pp53 it is mentioned only five examples dated 1. 1. 1900 were known of this 'double-circle' cancel. I would expect further discoveries to have been made in the 44 years since this excellent book was published.

I have the book in soft copy if anyone is interested. It was only recently that I obtained an original copy for myself.

Its a shame but the 20th century doesn't begin until 1901.
I'll have to settle for the earliest Melbourne double circle postmark.

Thanks for the additional information on these cancels 64idgaf.
I note that two of the five known cancelled on this date were from canceller 5 and one from each of cancellers 6, 7 and 9.

It would be interesting to see those postmarks and the time on each of them.
