It depends on the security measures you put in place. With the new UK Machins, supposedly, they read the bar codes and after so many of the same code go through, they start to kick them out of the system. That at least slows down the counterfeiting. Of course, it depends on why the counterfeiter is doing it. If they're just trying to make a buck, they don't care if the stamps go through the system at all. They already have their money. If they're trying to destabilize the postal system, as the current batch of Chinese counterfeiters are, then they'd at least be deterred from printing the same codes en masse and selling them off.
