Dell has all I want, BUT ! what bewilders me, modern computers are sold without optical drives I find it a "must have" (Although it seems to have a DVD slot? $1519 Oz = $1045 Us https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/...gen-intel-i7Key Features 13th Gen Intel® Core™ i7-13700 processor (16-Core, 24MB Cache, 2.1GHz to 5.1GHz) 512GB M.2 PCIe NVMe Solid State Drive with 16GB RAM Intel® UHD Graphics 770 with shared graphics memory WiFi 6 Wireless LAN and Bluetooth 1 x HDMI port 4 x USB-A 2.0 ports 3 x USB-A 3.2 ports 1 x USB-C 3.2 port SD card reader Windows 11 Home |

It has a bay/drawer for an optical drive, but not the actual drive installed. Candidly, rather than hunting down a drive to install, given that it is likely proprietary, I would just get this one to go along with the desktop: https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/...ectID=480247Unless you are doing a lot of high-speed ripping or need BD-RW capability, it should suit you just fine, and if needed you could always use it with another laptop or desktop. Regarding the tower itself and future enhancement: 1. I would research and see what the RAM chip configuration is and see what it would cost to expand to 32GB. Not sure if the unit has 1x16GB or 2x8GB (likely the latter, meaning you would have to purchase 1x32GB or 2x16GB rather than just buying 1x16GB). 2. Assuming you don't have external HDD storage to hook up, I would research what it would take to drop a second SSD (1TB or more) into the unit. Assuming the factory SSD uses the M.2 slot, your second one would have to be 2.5-inch or 3.5-inch format as this motherboard only has one M.2 slot capable of supporting SSDs). The motherboard will support up to 64GB (2x32GB) of DDR4-3200 RAM. The spec'd computer above comes with 1x16GB. Going to 32GB by adding 1x16GB would run about US$50. Going all the way to 64GB (2x32GB) would run about US$150. EDIT: And I'm guessing Rod does have an external HDD with the volume of stamps he's scanning! . The USB 3.2 ports will come in handy. |

Wow, I thought 16GB was over the top. Quote: Assuming you don't have external HDD storage to hook up, I have 6 x SSD External drives (500Gb to 1Tb) Hence the USB 3 req. Again thanks all for you suggestions No more anxiety |

Serendipity came knocking.
As I mentioned before, whenever I open an online *.pdf, I am somehow transported to Microsoft Edge.
This was posted recently on a File manager forum I read.
"MS Edge insists (and there's no other way according to MS ) on opening PDF files in its own internal viewer unless you opt to download it. But then there's the extra step to go to the download folder and manually open it with the preferred/default PDF application."
Do any members here experience the same if using Chrome?

I knew that for Windows internal links to the web like help, it will use Edge in this interest of a positive user experience.
My latest issue is that Edge will not allow access to a website (get a security pop up) and even after selecting override permanently, it refuses to load. Chrome works fine. |

By default, Windows will set Edge as the default program for the .pdf extension. Installing Adobe Reader or Acrobat and setting that as the default program for the .pdf extension should fix that problem.
What I see in Chrome (my default browser) is that when I click on a link to a .pdf file, it downloads it to my Downloads folder *and* automatically opens it in Acrobat in one step. I don't have to go to my Downloads folder and manually open the file. |

Quote: meaning that my primary workstation, an i7-6700k with 64GB of RAM, a PERFECTLY viable computer, cannot run Windows 11 What does it need that it doesn't have? |

Microsoft requires that CPUs are 8th generation or newer. The i7-6700k is a 6th-generation CPU.
The requirements aren't performance-based, but rather security-based. It has to support TPM 2.0.
It's complete bullsh*t. |

When I download a PDF with Chrome, it opens in Chrome and if I want to save I have to download the file. I do not have Acrobat as my default PDF reader but have FoxIt. |

I have the same situation as angore, Chrome automatically opens pdfs, and I also have FoxIt as a standalone pdf utility. So, although I'm on Win11 with mandatory Edge, I don't have to deal with it on pdfs.
I'm heading out to work in a few minutes, so I don't have time to go back to see how I set up the defaults (or where), but if the question is still open later on today, I'll try to take a look.
(Really, I think, I've been able to set things so that I only see Edge when having to deal with Microsoft help.) |
