Sent from New Haven Conn. May 31, 1940 - Arrives in Oslo Norway 13/9/40 about four months later.

Wonder where it was for those months; and how it got back. More questions than answers.

Seems the UPU rate of 3˘ had the 2˘ stamp fall off.

North Atlantic 1940 was not the place to be in a boat. Seems everyone was shooting anything they saw floating.

The occupation of Norway by Nazi Germany during the Second World War began on 9 April 1940 after Operation Weserübung.

This sent after invasion had started.

Any ideas on where/who applied the circled "Ae"?
Wonder if the germans had taken over the post at this point. Seems to be one of things they do first, and start censoring everything.

Found this image of J. Pinckney H. Adams.Seems he died in 1946.
Found in notable people of Vermont (from 1912)
No info for after

Also consider, the Oslo postmark may instead be the date the address correction was made and it started its journey back.

John,
A reasonable possibility.
Considering the time and place, I'm sure it had interesting travels over and back.

It was a German censor marking.

Fwiw the 2c stamp may not have "fallen off". It could have been removed by the censors looking for any secret messages.
