Hi all, this cut square has what looks like 4 locks of hair around the ear area but they are not angled like what design U72 is supposed to be. What do you guys think? Is this U319 or something else?

Scott type U72/UPSS Die 89(C) has two locks of hair in front of the ear which makes an appearance of 4 parallel lines. The parallel lines refer to the raised portions, not the lines separating those portions. So, yes you have a scan of U319 (or U318, hard to be certain from the scan).

Definitely not the Scott type U71/UPSS Die 88 ear.

Thanks for the response. I just wanted to attach another image of the cut square next to another one that is genuine so you can see the differences around the ear area better.

Interesting. Doesn't seem to match either type of ear. Send a scan to Dan Undersander, editor of the UPSS 19th century catalog. His email is *** Private information removed by Staff. They both look like Die 89 to me. Although, they are different. Maybe you have two working dies of Die 89?
