See a lot of posts talking about PNC's, but not too many showing PNC's. So maybe I'll put this one out there to show the odd or unusual ones you like. This one just came in the mail: (never stop looking ) Thanks, pat

Scott #1891 plate number 1: I think this was the first ever plate number coil (PNC). Scott #2131 plate number 3: Vertical line pair. Scott #3044a plate number 1111: There is an ultra thin blue "string" dangling from the kestrel's tail. These images poorly represent the actual stamp. Scott #4283 plate number S111111111: This is one of six designs within the "Flags of Our Nation" series that contained plate numbers. More importantly, this is one of four designs that printed exclusively with plate numbers. Thus, it is impossible to get these four stamp designs without plate numbers. Scott #5242 plate number P11111: I wish more commemoratives were available in coil format. Though these were printed, it is my understanding that they were not available to the public in most post offices. |

Bluejay2, you are mostly correct with the above post. One small addition, the "vertical line pair' is called a "PS2" or a "plate strip of 2" in PNC speak. Also, the Father Hesburgh stamp was not available at any post office as a coil. A special roll of these had to be ordered from "the cave" in Kansas.

I did not know the "Flags of Our Nation" existed as a PNC. Over the years I've been putting aside any I find on incoming mail. Not so much a collector of PS3/PS5, but I like used singles on cover or unusual chance usages. Thanks, Pat Modified Rates Effective July 1, 2001 Express Mail rates will increase 1.5 percent across the board. The increases will range from 15 cents to $1.80 per piece. The Express Mail Post Office to Addressee service half-pound rate will increase by 20 cents, to $12.45. The cost today would be (I think) $27.90 SC3473 issued 29 Jan 2001 Next printed one seems to be SC3648 $13.65 was issued 30 July 2002. Aug 27, 2001 (1111) |

I began getting into PNC collecting after pursuing all formats and printers of the 2022 Waving Flags stamps. I have several favorite PNCs but here is one in my collection: 1 cent Apple Scott 5037 - newest plate number P2222 My goal is to have all the low denomination fruit stamps (1 - 10 cents) - I have all of the ones with P1's plate number and for P2's, have 1, 3 and 5 cents. There is a new plate number for the 2 cent but a little hard to get right now. Sources tell me that it is likely a new plate number will be issued for 10 cent coils in the future. |

Chris, just for your info, the 3 cent Strawberries and the 5 cent Grapes have now been found with the "2" numbers OK, I see that you have them! Wonder how you got them - my Post Office still has all the fruit as "1" numbers.

I got them through a post office in CT that has a philatelic desk.
You are very lucky to have a post office that sells coils with plate numbers!!!! Here in NYC my experience so far is that most post offices may have some of the low denomination panes, a few commemoratives and definitives. One of the worst post offices I have had experience trying to get philatelic material has been that largest one in NYC - Farley PO on 34th Street. I have had better luck in my area and the Cooper Union post office in Manhattan. Still they never seem to have coils. I have to check a few of the larger ones out.
As for the CT post office, message me here and I will give you contact info to see if you is taking orders from people. He is an avid philatelists and keeps up with the pncs and other stamp issues. |

Don, that is a nice set, but technically they are not PNC's. They are mis-slit coils, A PNC or Plate Number Coil has the "plate number" printed on the stamp and is not supposed to be removed during the slitting operation.

Mr. Eos, that is impressive! Shows that something can be done with modern stamps!

Here are some of my favorite PNCs... First Day Cover with a sheet stamp (Scott 1890, "for amber waves of grain"), a coil plate strip of three (PS3) from plate 3 (Scott 1891, "from sea to shining sea"), and a booklet pane (Scott 1892-1893, "for purple mountains majesty"). Scott 1891 Flag Over Lighthouse, plate numbers 1-7, with purple machine cancels (PMCs). Plates 6 and 7 with PMCs are extremely difficult to find. Several examples of Scott 1895h, Flag Over Supreme Court, with Black Field of Stars. USPS Souvenir Page with Scott 4273-4282, the first Flags of Our Nation series. FDC with a succession of rate change coil stamps (Scott 1743, 1820, 1947, 2112) and a plate strip of 3 (PS3) of Scott 2279, E Earth, with plate number 1111. FDC with the first modern series of official stamps (Scott O127-133) and a coil plate strip of 2 (PS2) of Scott O135 with plate number 2. |

I find the early PNCs interesting since many also have line pairs, especially the Transportation Coils, like these. The 18c Surrey's Plate number 16 is the highest single color PNC I have, but I assume some issues go higher than that. |
