Really affected me, Bobby I used it just about daily, contributed to it for over 10 years.
I had an inkling when Allan Oliver never answered my emails.
One of THE best information sites of GB Postmarks on the planet.

A shame, it does seem to be gone. The link now talks about parcel collections. Did not click any further! I too tried emailing Allan a few months back, without success. Regards DavidR |

Rod,
You can still access portions of the site through the Wayback Machine. The database-driven sections (Postmark Database, etc.) won't work, but anything that was a static page, image, or PDF download, should still be accessible. |

Thanks Postmaster. I am not adverse to using Wayback machine in this case, despite concerns from Don.
However, I doubt very much, if it will be of any use. For example, I could type in ONDO as a text string, and get the hundreds of options of postmarks that met that criteria.
Same with numbers and subsidiary impressions , Triangles etc
That was the power of that amazing database.
Hope springs eternal, I suspect persons unknown will not allow that work to just die and wither away. Like Steve panting's telegraphs link, it will, like Phoenix, arise from the ashes somewhere.
The biggest disappointment , was having no warnings from the webmasters. It's like knocking the door of a dear friend, and having no response.

Yeah, that's one of the frustrating things about web philately these days. There are valuable philatelic websites out there that would be relatively simple to keep running once the original creator has stopped maintaining them or has passed away. But, contingency plans need to be made in advance, because it becomes really hard to contact the owners after the site is offline, and in the event the creator has passed, the family couldn't care less about maintaining/transferring the site in most cases.
My site will stay up for some time after I'm gone, but it will die eventually because of software updates that break things. |

Indeed, I recall saving all I could of my late dear friend Mette Heindorff (DK) Was really sad when her extensive works were broken up.
I then wondered why Philatelists do not consider just placing it on DVD at least that way, it survives.
I would have happily paid several hundred dollars for Allan Oliver's work.
Will, one day SCF die? Stampsmarter? (Heaven forbid)

Surely someone knows if Allan Oliver is still with us?
In any event, as has been said on countless occasions, archive what you want/find offline. It's the easiest way to avoid regret later on down the track. |
