Hello All. Has anyone used the Hawid Special Mount Adhesive on stamp mounts? I have an almost full package of the Showgard 27mm strips that I've had for a long time. The adhesive on the back of the strips looks to be "checked". I cut a small piece off of a strip to see if it would stick to a piece of paper. The adhesive didn't really hold. Aside from the checked look of the adhesive on the back, the strips are in excellent shape. No wrinkling or curling etc. Like most of you, I don't want to toss something if it can be used, within reason of course. Would I be able to use this Hawid adhesive on these mounts so that they can be used? I'm getting ready to place an order for some other mounts and have no issues with adding some new 27 mm strips to the order if need be. Any thoughts? Advice?

I've never used the lick-and-stick backs of mounts (in fact, for a long time, I didn't know they were adhesive). I always use a dab of Pritt stick, which also enables the mount to be moved if necessary (other glue sticks are available). And no, I haven't conducted detailed scientific tests to compare the archival qualities of Pritt with those of water.

Oldmanriver, I would go ahead and try to use the glue. Give it a week and see what happens - it should be OK

I am happy to be corrected, but I think the Hawid glue is to seal one additional side of a Hawid mount that only has a bottom seal.

I know I've used that glue, along with a special metal tool they used to sell, to make custom-sized mounts (in the Showgard style of a sealed top and bottom) for odd-sized stamps, booklets, and souvenir sheets.

Imo, I'm not sure I'd use the Hawid glue to adhere a mount to the page. It seems like there are better and more widely-available adhesives, some of which may do less damage to the page.

I concur with Philatarium - I have a tube of the Hawid stuff, and it's more of a solvent type glue; have used it for sealing open-top mount edges along with a straightedge. A standard Elmer's type glue stick would seem a better solution to above but I defer others here who have done that.

I recommend this stuff. Scotch double-sided scrapbooking tape. It's strong enough to hold the mounts in place, but is removable so you can re-position the mounts if you need to, at least for the first year or two. After that, you can still remove the mount, but you'll probably need to replace the tape when you reattach the mount to the page. It comes in "removable" and "permanent" varieties, but both are removable – I use the "permanent". Been using it for about 24 years without issue. NOTE: this is NOT the ordinary Scotch double-sided tape! Don't use that.
