(Unscientific survey)
Seems a lot of the Australia album collections for sale on ebay stop about 1988 or soon after.

My apologies Plateflaw, I should've mentioned that my collection is fine used, not mint.

For all of those collectors that carried on through the 1990s and into the 21st century, regardless of whether they're collecting mint &/or used, I salute you!

I do have a few mint minisheets post 1988, but these stop after the 1915 Gallipoli centenary.

Any recommendations on collecting modern Australian stamps?...Given the decline in conventional mail...

Actually, the decline in snail-mail usage means there will be fewer modern stamps in use, and the canceled ones will be harder to come by and therefore may be more valuable with time.
That's what my logic says, but you need to listen to what the market says.

More modern may be scarcer but if no one wants to collect them then they will not increase in value. Factors like self-adhesive complicate collecting. But my dad saves a lot of modern mail!

It would be impossible to find a modern used stamp that would outvalue one that is mint unused. In the pre-decimal era, this may be the case during the reign of KGVI, but in the decimal period - no.
A collector of modern Australian stamps will only find value in the varieties and errors from the past 60 years, but these are out of budget range for collectors who's budget only allows them to purchase stamps from 1990 onwards (all stamps from 1966 can still be used for postage).

I must be a rarity as I actually still collect stamps for the enjoyment of collecting. I have noone to hand down my collection to and when i'm cremated my collection will go up in smoke with me. I have no interest in investing or speculating in stamps.

I personally collect to a cut off date. The date you wish to stop at is upto you. As long as you are happy with it. If not you can always extend the date and acquire the stamps.

I only have my partner who is not a stamp collector, though she has sound knowledge of some pre-decimal and decimal Australian stamps, and the collection goes to her after I'm gone.
My interest in stamp collecting is the same as you and with so many countless millions of collectors world wide.
Although my collection can be used as an investment, I collect solely for the enjoyment of collecting and the enjoyment in the hunt to secure certain stamps that would be outside the scope of a normal collection, if I'm lucky enough to collect them. Stamp collecting will always be a hobby for me.

A more serious approach to collecting can involve spending money. It does not need to be spent with the intent of investment but given a constraint I would prefer to spend what funds on something I like rather than as a "fill in the space" collector. For example, golfers may spend a lot of money on green fees, equipment, etc, without expecting a ROI. It is entertainment expense.
