I've got Neinken 1851-57 12 cent stamp book and it is very helpful. Is there more reference material available for the Scott 17?
Also Scott 36 plate 3, having a difficult searching out reference material.
Thanks all.

Those covers are amazing.
We may have talked about it before, but the bisect reminds me of the two Wagshal had, but they were to Quebec, LC, as opposed to yours - to NB; not to mention the Express Mail Cancel. I don't know that I can recall ever seeing a 4x6c rate. That is really rare. edit: I suspect that there are a few out there, that I've just missed the over 3000 miles part of them. |

Quote: I suspect that there are a few out there Hi TX - you may be correct, but Bill McDaniel had an article in the Sesquicentennial book (linked above) of 3˘ 1851 stamps paying multiple domestic rates. He lists three triple 6˘ rate covers and my cover is the only quad rate listed. He doesn't list any larger multiples of the 6˘ rate. There are more and larger multiples of the 10 cent rate. |

I can definitely believe that, as the 6c rates are exponentially harder to find than the 10c rate covers. When pre-payment of mail by stamps became compulsory, the 10c rate was already in effect - and the use of stamps really accelerated.
I used to talk regularly at shows with Bill McDaniel about his large multiple census project. He tracked that kind of stuff for years. Too bad he's not with us anymore, he was another Texas collector, and he had a nice 3c collection. |

the census only lists covers with 3˘ stamps, so there could be a 4x rate with 2 #17s that would not be captured in the census. |

True, and at first glance, such a 24c cover might look like just any other cover to England. |
