Hello,

I started collection when I was a child, stopped because life goes on, and back to it now! I inherit collection of family members, it makes lot of variety and duplicates up to the 70s. So I try to give a sense to that mess... I think best would be to trade some and get specialized, worldwide makes too much to learn, and I have so many old stamps with varieties! But I need 50 posts and I'm not sure if people wants to hear that much from me

I try to not think about price, hobby isn't made to make money or think about it! I like to look at rare and nice piece of history, wondering who used it, what been sent and what was happening in everydays's life at that time!

Here is the kind of question I want to learn to answer with lurking in the web. Since it is unused without gum, how can I be sure it is an original and not a copy? I found it an old family album in the middle of other Argentina common stamps. No other Argentina states found in my collection. I would be surprised original collector put a fake there, but also surprised of a #5 from Buenos Aires too! I suspect a modern reprint I didn't noticed but there must be something different to dissociate original?

Not searching for answer with that post but just to give an idea who I am and what I'm searching for.

Have a nice day!

Welcome!

Nar, in regards to your stamp, you can always try www.stampsmarter.org and look for "Album Weeds". That is a series of older books that can show how to tell a fake from a real stamp!

nar1123,

Collecting for the enjoyment of collecting, whatever that might be, is the name of the game. Don't hesitate to ask questions especially if you need basic information and especially more advanced sources of information for any possible topic. You should be able to find folks on this board a little further along on their collecting journey glad to share experiences.

My personal bias is a used stamp loses the story of its journey in the postal service when it is removed from the cover it transported to its destination. Collecting postal history adds a whole new aspect to your journey in our hobby.

Wishing you many enjoyable future days in our hobby. Russ

Thanks for welcome words!

I would just like to add that I'm french canadian so my apologizes if my English is not perfect...

@ PaddleMore, it was in my grandpa's album, a jeweler, he had no interest of keeping fakes... That collection ended in the 1970s, he had no access to foreign catalogs, I would say he been fooled in a sale. I looked ebay and it seems there are some fakes for sale for few $ when listed to 5k so 99% chances of a involuntary collect, 1% chance a voluntary collect, 0% chances of a real one haha!

@Peter, I will look to the link you posted, it can be helpful for other suspicious samples!

@ Russ, I share your point of view!

In overall, I learned a lot in last days, so you will be stuck with me around for some times :D Thanks to active members to share their knowledge!

Have a nice day,

Marc
