Corid,

If I may ask, where in Illinois are you located? (city is sufficient). We just had a stamp show here locally last month (Champaign-Urbana), and there are quite a few local club shows across the state and central Indiana, as well as major shows in Chicago, Indianapolis and St. Louis.

Attending a local stamp show once he's a little bit older would make for a great educational and bonding experience. I would recommend a smaller local club show to one of the major regional shows until he's quite a bit older, as the bigger shows tend not to cater as much to the novice collector.

Also, most local shows have 5-cent or 10-cent tables where kids can pick through masses of material from around the world to their heart's content without breaking the bank. Many shows/clubs also give stamps away to children who attend.

In my area, those "kids" are usually 50-80 years old.

In places like ebay, you can find deals of 1-2 cents for a stamp, depending on what you are looking for.

Hoosierbot aka Russ,

Thank you so much for your post! I'm excited to be able to share with him things like how stamps used to be like 3 cents and I imagine at some point in his future stamps may not be a thing and it will all be electronic! I hope not but that's my thinking anyway. I love how you got started! Just another story I will share with him :)

Revenue Collector,
I'm in Antioch. I didn't even know stamp shows were a thing so that's great to know, thank you for sharing! As he gets a little older I would definitely take him to a show where he can have a hands on experience of going through them himself, love it! Thank you! :)

My website, Stamp Smarter has features that might interest folks of most any age (but I admit that I never thought of trying to appeal to kids under 6-7).

But you might to check out the website (free, totally non-commercial), here are a couple of pages which may be of interest at his age.

If people collect it, there's a show or convention for it.
