Hi everyone,

I only recently discovered and joined this community, but you all have already helped me tremendously by solving the mystery of my Romanian cinderella -- thank you again!

I was given a bunch of stamps years ago and have just gotten back into it... I'm hoping that by immersing myself a bit more and learning from all of the seasoned pros in this community I can wrangle up the motivation to sort through my hundreds of Dutch stamps and weed out doubles, soak them, and display them. It's a massive project sitting there waiting for me but one day we'll get it all done.

How did everyone get into philately?

Welcome.

If you search the World Modern Stamps Mint and Used forum for 'nederland' you will find some information on Dutch permanent stamps.

It is work in progress, going back in time.

Welcome! My mom had a tiny stockbook album collection she started as a child; she showed me that album when I was child and I was always fascinated with them. When I was a teenager I started ordering worldwide stamp lots from ebay and putting them in stockbooks... the rest is history.

Nightwitch,

My grandfather was a rural mail carrier. My grandmother's father was a postmaster in a small rural post office. Asked for a stamp album when I was eight. Now approaching 60 yers a collector. Postal history interests began when my grandmother gave me a post card she received in her youth postmarked at her dad's post office.

Collecting for the enjoyment of collecting, whatever that might be, is the name of the game. Don't hesitate to ask questions especially if you need basic information and especially more advanced sources of information for any possible topic. You should be able to find folks on this board a little further along on their collecting journey glad to share experiences.

My personal bias is a used stamp loses the story of its journey in the postal service when it is removed from the cover it transported to its destination. Collecting postal history adds a whole new aspect to your journey in our hobby.

Wishing you many enjoyable future days in our hobby. Russ

NSK, thanks for the tip! I feel like I have a decent handle on the Dutch research being that I am Dutch myself and can translate it all, but for the finer points of the stamps' histories themselves, I'll be lurking :)

17stamps, ditto. It's amazing how one nudge can spark an interest.
