I have spent very little time on revenues in general. But in going through a few pages that came in a worldwide box my wife bought, I found a few that seem to have value and I'm trying to learn a little.

This one seems to have a high cat, but I like the fact that the cancellation has the word "stage" - I'm assuming that this was taxes paid for a stagecoach trip.
Does anyone have any further info on this cancellation? (Also, did I get the basic ID right?)

R74c = yes.
I think the word in the cancel is more likely "STORE"
Only very early were these required to match their title, so used later, it could be any tax/fee.

This is a custom house marking, "appraiser's stores". From SF, if I remember correctly. It's a nice marking, and on a stamp with decent cat value.

This is one that I have. It literally took me years to identify the cancel.

Lovely, especially the strike on the imperf.

Your next challenge: Find either stamp (not necessarily with this particular cancel) on document. Scarce as hen's teeth. I own 2 or 3 examples of the perforated example on document, but am still searching for an example of the imperf $1 Passage Ticket on document. I've never seen one.

Here is the basic "APPRAISER'S STORES" handstamp. I will eventually update this with a better processed scan of the actual handstamp.

It is identified as San Francisco Type 3.

According to Lou Alfano, who authored an article about Custom Cancels for The American Revenuer, "The "Appraiser's Stores" was the name given to government warehouses where merchandise was taken to be examined by Customs so that the proper duty could be assessed thereon."

This handstamp is known on four of the 1st issue $1 revenues.

I have never seen any of the San Francisco customs cancels/markings on document. Stamps with the handstamps are not particularly difficult to find, but never on document. I would certainly be interested in any scans folks may have showing the documents.

Discussion for another thread, but these and the San Francisco "Deposit/Duty/Excess" and New York "LIQUIDATED" markings aren't technically cancels.

I have seen a few from S.F. over the years, but I do not have any. Lou Alfano was the expert in Custom House cancels, and he had a wonderful collection of them.
