I collect mainly GB, but am going through a backlog of US stamps to catalog and put into my collection. I came across this one that I am a bit lost with.

It is a 2c Washington, I know it has its issues, but I am trying to learn this area hence the question. It has a watermark so I believe it is the 1895 series, I think type III. The color is actually not carmine or red, more of a orangey color which I do not see listed for Type III. The watermark has me confused as well. Looks like it is "U" inverted reversed, but I do not see that in the specialized catalog for these.

Could be completely be off base here hopefully someone can point me inthe right direction.

Watermarks are not usually listed if not "standard" orientation, unlike in the British Empire.

Yours has the triangle of a Type III which is the triangle found on both Type III and Type IV (279B) which is also watermarked.

As seen in this image from the Scott catalog, this watermark type has very large letters such that very often only a portion appears on any one stamp. Yours has a portion of an "S" as outined:

Very few U.S. collectors go beyond the Scott Specialized listings to involve themselves with paper/watermark orientation, which is typically left to the specialty literature at the next level.

Is the watermark view they show as if it was the front of the stamp then no thte back? That is where I could be confused.

Am I correct that this is a Type III and not a Type IV as the color, although it did not show in the photograph, is really quite orangey pink.

Type III and type IV are differentiated by small design differences. Ignore the color/shade when determining the basic type.
