A while back when I was looking for Wash-Franks on ebay I'd run into prices like $150 for a 3 cent Liberty. With a certificate! I thought OMG. The poor person that might buy this. I wish there was a philatelist that worked at ebay to watch for these skams.

ebay had volunteers that did a great job at policing stamps. ebay dumped the program. They have zero interest in culling out the bad guys. It would cut down on revenue.

Kaci, I've found Stamp collecting to be a really fun hobby! Keep at it! Although a lot of the stamps you've inherited might not be worth a fortune, they're still fun to look at, sort through, and find the history of them.

Don't let the unfriendly comments on this forum discourage you. My best advice is to go to your local library and check out a Scott Catalog. If you want to buy one for yourself, buy one that is a couple of years old because they are really expensive to keep current. I like the binders and slipcases from Amos Advantage to keep the stamps in order once you have them sorted. And get yourself a handy pair of stamp tongs! Those 3 things will get you a long ways to sorting through your collection and finding the few awesome finds that I'm sure you have in your collection somewhere! That's the fun part.

Many experienced collectors prefer to emphasize the attributes of our hobby which have a high probability of being delivered, things like the educational value. They know that the hobby is not likely to deliver wealth to anyone.
Yes, finding a less common stamp or cover has intrinsic value and is something that everyone enjoys and pleasant surprises are always welcome. But just like it would not be wise to encourage someone to take up art collecting under the premise that they might one day find a Rembrandt at a garage sale; many stamp folks try to downplay the idea that one should collect stamps for the anticipation of finding a rarity.
