I am going through my father's stamp collection and taking inventory in Excel, and noticed several full albums of first day stamp cards. Many from Mystic stamp (cripe). He had several hundred of these nicely contained in albums and was an avid collector. I am glad he enjoyed these with little understanding of the minimum value.

Here's my question - as I take inventory, is it worth going through these card by card and listing them by stamp and date, or should or count them as a whole and leave it at that?

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Why are you making an inventory? If you're going to sell the FDCs, it's unlikely to be worth your listing them individually.

Well, I was thinking about making an inventory for the FDCs, but if it not worth the time, I can do a lump sum count and move on.

Would anyone want these? How much could I realistically get for these?

I have been very vigorous in sorting out my father's stamp collection. He had a passion for FDS and he has many, many, many of these (yep, my trip to Aruba is not happening). I show 14 full albums but there are a few more. They are in great condition. Volumewise I hope there has to be some value to these although there is not alot of interest

Check out the selling and then sold sections on ebay for results on these albums. Should answer your questions.

Thanks, so far from what I am seeing, I won't be going to the French Riviera. I have 14 albums of these. Selling these individually on ebay is far too much work.

Well I went through these FCS and have 22 albums and about 3300 FDCs from 1945 and up, although most are from 1991 to 2020. They are beautiful and well stored and cool, but very likely not a jackpot.

Too bad folks don't find interest in these anymore.

There are two stamp dealers Des Moines situated. They would likely have little to no interest but may purchase the postage if in need. There are also 9 stamp clubs through out the state. If one or two are close enough you might stop in for an opinion or a thought. Call first and explain the Mystic albums. Not worth shipping cost. Assume you will be taking the Mystic albums back home. Not sure about the FDC demand but not a lot and not much value. 3300 @ 5¢ is $165. Who will give me 10¢? Anyone have a pricing idea on the bulk covers? Get a price for the whole package if you can for certain!

In today's Kelleher auction there were a few FDC collections, some with older better items that sold for a decent price, and others that had no interest and went unsold. Here is one that may be similar in size and scope to the one being discussed.

It opened at $375 and went unsold, no bidders. At 420 pounds, that's less than a dollar a pound, and that was too much for anyone to bite.

That said, there are people who collect them, they are pretty, especially when presented with nice cachets in fancy albums. Just have to find the right buyer for the right quantity at the right price.

Based on the volume, there are probably some better items in there. Maybe not $100 items, but likely some $5 covers like priority mail or certain sheets that may go for more. Ideally you want to find someone to take everything at once, not just pull out the good stuff and leave you with firewood. Hopefully there is a stamp club, stamp show, or dealer within driving distance to help you out.
