Why Is 2022 Canada Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee FDC Selling For Big Amounts?

The issue price of this FDC is $1.92. According to the Detail magazine, 8000 was to be printed.. Normally, FDCs at this price point and printage do not sell for more than 2x issue in the secondary market.

Today, a FDC sold for $44.95, 23x issue price. Is 23x issue price, "reasonable price"? If you find one for less than $20, let me know.

Something funny is going. High demand? Low printage?

I am merely asking the reason for the out of norm discrepancy.

The only person who gave a reason is sak who quoted "technical difficulties at the printer". So instead of the 8000 plan, maybe they printed only 4,000?

Just to be clear...
The "technical difficulties" occurred during the production of the Infantry issue of 1989.
I was using it as an example of how there can be a logical explanation for a price anomaly.
It was indeed the result of low production numbers.

I was not impressed with the immediate dismissal of the original question.
One dealer asking $100 for a 5¢ stamp does happen. But it is abnormal for so many dealers to jack the price on a particular issue.
It deserves some sort of explanation.

With people collecting Royality subject material or are looking for a piece of that history for thematic collections, 8000 is not a huge # worldwide. And it was issued 1 year 7 months ago. Star Trek material sold well to those who collected that subject matter. Some subject covers sell out. Many do not.
Similar to the canadian quarterly pack - apr-may 2020 sold out quickly because of the canadian painting series or the jan-march 2021 quarterly pack with the 12 different stamps on the Chinese year of souvenir sheet and the other 12 different stamps in the booklet.

They were being sold for $3.85 until out of stock. Then they were all sold, harder to find, demand was high and the price went up. What more is there? Pretty simple actually.

$150 still is not $45.




If it was offered at a fraction of the price only a month ago, 18 months after it was issued, the argument of a small print run is not a very strong one. That would have driven up the price much sooner. This looks like a fad.

Speculating: since the stamp was issued shortly before the Queen died, people may have been buying this cover because it is the last jubilee issue (maybe even last Canadian stamp depicting her?), and dates span her reign. If that is the reason, it is likely the price will dive in a few years when non-philatelic demand dries up.

On a personal note: it is a 'Machin'. Maybe I should see if a European dealer sells the sheet stamp and booklet.

Forget the prices that this item is being listed for or what sellers are asking. That is utterly meaningless data. Anyone can price anything at any amount... that doesn't mean that it will ever sell.

The only gauge of actual market value is to look at SOLD listings, and even then that is only a snapshot in time on one venue.

Every time I hear someone say "Well, it sells for $XXX on ebay!" my B.S. detector goes off. It's what was asked, not what any customer was actually willing to pay.

The last customer was actually willing to pay $45!

What an absolutely beautifully designed cover. The picture of QE2 is stunning. I don't collect anything Canadian, but this thread brought this item to my attention. I may try purchase one! At a reasonable cost of course.
