I found these in an auction. They look a little suspicious. Are they forgeries?

Thanks for the answer. I will let the seller know about it.

The smaller "Hope" also is a forgery (I have one). The bigger one is not a stamp.

Unfortunately, the quality of the images are so poor one can barely make the stamps out.

The smaller stamp with the Griquland West "G" overprint is not necessarily a forgery, just because it is different to the one you have, because there were a number of different styles of the G used for this overprint.

I am guessing, it is hard to tell from the image, that the larger stamp is a Cape Of Good Hope Revenue stamp also with a Griquland West "G" overprint, and could also possibly be genuine.

SACC tells that these stamps have four different G overprints issued in 1877, 1878 and 1879. Only the 2nd issue has tilted G's with a bigger font size, so it is easy to say that the six pence overprint in the image is a forgery. Those who have the catalogue can check it on page 6.

Just for the record , the Scott Classic Catalog has 17 different styles of the Griqualand "G" overprint . We would need much larger scans to have a opinion .
