Possible places:

Eltham - South Taranaki District
Threntham - Upper Hutt City
Waltham - Christchurch City

Chatham Islands do not appear to fit.

If it is not a 'T', BURNHAM CAMP comes into view.

Yes I wondered about Burnham Camp - the post office there was in operation from around 1939 until the early 1990s I believe, so a 1974 postmark would fit.
