Hello there

I need a help, I was told that this type of cancel on the stamp could be for revenue/fiscal use. Is it possible to confirm this just by looking?

opinions welcome.

The purple colour of the cancel points at a revenue cancel.
High value stamps were mostly used for revenue purposes.
It looks like the cancel is for Calcutta, a port city. Together with above, that would make it very possible that it was used to pay customs duties.

The clue might be in the word at the bottom.

You might want to include "India King Edward VII 25 Rupee" in your thread title to attract attention of India specialists.

The postmark looks like Calcutta GPO treasury.

Given the face value of the stamp, might the usage be for internal revenue?

Well spotted! It does look like it.

These high values were mostly used for revenue purposes. Internal Revenue is possible.

I had another look at this stamp just now.

Without knowing the ins and outs of the administration of the Indian postal service back then, but with the date of the cancellation being 1911, could this stamp have been 'cashed out' (ie: internal bookkeeping) between the Postal and Treasury Departments when replaced with the KGV stamp?

I think this would have been the current 25R stamp until the KGV stamp was issued in 1913?

Welcome to be corrected on this point.

My 2d.

You are correct Cjd

I really should've looked at the SG catalogue first
