So this has happened more than once to me. This time I sent a picture or 2 to the auction house showing how the items were actually upside down when packed. This caused hundreds of stamps to come loose from their marked / plated marked stock cards and fallen out of their marked glassines.

The House reply: "We would not have checked that the cards were upright, just by weight that the box had content."

Humm, they must have forgotten that the items had to be displayed for the posted video presentation and then packed for shipping! They simply threw the stuff in upside down and must have thought, who cares!

RIDICULOUS!

Many others would have viewed in person before the sale. I can have some sympathy for the auction house, many viewers are careless and untidy when they view. It becomes an impossible task to herd these cats.

Not in this case. It's the auction house video. Then they packed it up for shipping upside down it seems.

I person viewing (cats to herd) usually occurs AFTER material is scanned or videoed for the online or hard copy catalog.

Likewise, there is no assurance that the delivery service will not drop the package such that material material is dislodged.

That said, I feel your frustration.

But in this case all the cards & envelopes were put in upside down - before being shipped. The size of the container made it impossible for them to all flip upside down. The very top picture is me unpacking. All the material arrived upside down in the plastic case while the rest of the contents outside of the plastic box were right side up or secured properly. Whoever packed the plastic box placed it all in upside down.

Or, the "this side up" label was applied upside down. Or the courier didn't pay attention. Or, the packer was inexperienced. Or, the seller didn't rearrange the lot after viewing. The auction house may pay you lip service but expect nothing else. There may be fifty different reasons your purchase turned into a philatelic milkshake.

The material could have been placed in the box properly, the box sealed and later labeled after it was forgotten what was up and what was down. Viewing does not enter the picture because it is always attended by a House person to keep an eye on consignors property and usually the material comes on and off a shelf.

There were no labels anywhere and I didn't expect anything from the house. They already said they didn't check the items before being shipped. Ridiculous.

It comes down to one thing ,those stockcards should of been packed more tight in the plastic box . Newspaper or bubble wrap should of been used to tightly pack the cards .

For something like a penny red plating I definitely sympathize. That takes some effort to re-plate. Hopefully, it won't be too painful.

Waned to follow up and post that the auction house was more than fair in offering an adjustment to the lot pricing after the packing mishap. Alls well that ends well.
