1897 Flag Handstamp On The 3c Jubilee

I found this item in a collection I just acquired. Is this (as suggested on the card) a very rare cancel?

Auction house claims only one on cover, 5 or 6 on stamp.
Estimate $ 500, sold $ 300.

Anyone else think those handstamps look different?

Looking at OP's image, the lower triangle on the far right is shorter than the upper. In the image from the auction lot, they are almost exactly mirrorred in the horizontal axis.

Whether this is caused by the inking, I cannot say. I also see similarities that make me think they, actually, are the same.

It appears the two killers are struck 180 rotation to each other. Assuming the cover to be "upright", I have rotated the loose single and added some lines. Note the near-alignment of the blue vertical line across the points. Similarly, the jogs in the pairs of orange and green lines needed to connect them up across the points of the flag.


This would not be unusual since the killer is (apparently) not duplexed to the CDS.

As an aside, I am always intrigued by claims of:"one of x known", without any reference to who or what society or auction house is doing the census work - seldom the quality or level of confidence one gets compared to a R. A. Siegel census with illustrations and citations to certs and previous sales. Just saying.

The submitted item may be an early recorded date for this item which is either a fake or an unauthorized local creation. The marking is recorded as #1401 in "FANCY CANCELS ON CANADIAN STAMPS" by David Lacelle and published by BNAPS
