Good to see at least some philatlic market segments are thriving.
Not only were the results very strong for revenue cancels in the Bleckwenn auction at Siegel, but I just saw that the Pacific Mail Steamship cancel holding offered at Schuyler Rumsey went for moon money.
I knew I wouldn't be a player given that the estimate was $10,000-15,000... but it hammered at a whopping $47,500... $56,050 after juice.
That means the average cost per stamp was $518. Yes there are some very rare pieces and some great multiple-strike stamps, but there are also some $50-$150 items in there. Definitely a case of the whole being more than the sum of its parts. Two somebodies apparently wanted the whole kit and kaboodle intact, along with the included collateral.
