I recently bough a large lot of Match & Medicine stamps

As I was going thorough them I almost pass on this as a duplicate. Then I noticed that one had a denomination and one did not. Doe anyone know anything about this non-denominated version?

thanks

Joe

The wording in the left panel, also, is different.

The one without the 1 is pre-1864. RS212 has multiple versions.

The bottom stamp is RS212. The top stamp is a facsimile label (note that "U. States Inter. Revenue" was deleted) used for advertising purposes after the proprietary tax was rescinded in 1883.

The labels are listed in Springer. Although this one is reasonably available, some are very scarce, and even rare.

Thanks everyone. Especially SPQR. The link you gave showed photos of several other stamps I have set aside that I've been trying to figure out what they were:

though I'm not sure what this one is:

The link refers to "Springer-listed facsimiles". what is this reference?

thanks

Joe

Springer's were a series of ten small paper pamphlet style editions issued in the 60's to the 80's. The seventh edition has the M&M facsimiles in it.

The label you could not identify is a facsimile for H.H. Warner

"Springer" is Springer's Handbook of North American Cinderella Stamps Including Taxpaid Revenues - there are, I believe 10 editions of the pamphlet and I think the M&M facsimiles are in the Seventh edition.
