This is a Colombian stamp overprinted with 'Panama' for use in the newly independent country of Panama. Later these were also overprinted 'Canal Zone'. Look for these under 'Panama' in the catalog

I understand that, given the title. The question concerns the two red horizontal lines, at top and bottem.

Double bars are scarce on this stamp.(specimen overprints exist on double bar types). A bottom bar occured when the sheet was inverted during printing; half a sheet at a time then inverted. Different methods of printing occured with this issue; its a study in itself.

It looks to me like the two overprints are different colors, slightly. Does it also look that way in real life? If so the second overprint might be a forgery...

However, scott states that the bar colors can vary from carmine to almost pink. Will keep researching.

Based on the printing process, though, I think the bars on the same stamp would be the same color? If one bar is underinked, it could perhaps appear a little lighter, but wouldn't the ink be the same color?
