A good part of the cards in my collection I've been researching are from the early 1870's. I've owned these postcards for over 25 years as I've mentioned, but never really knew much about them. I have and do collect local picture postcards, but never really cared much about the examples of non-picture cards. The main reason I joined this group was to finally learn just what historical and monetary value these cards have. I had no idea when these cards were created, and issued, or the many facets and nuances that go with them, but I've slowly realized the significance that these early cards hold in the postal history of this country.
I was surprised to learn that the US Government didn't formally let postcards be used until 1873, even though the card was created in 1861. Having a good selection of those, sparked my curiosity to say the least and a driving factor in coming here. The help I've received has been wonderful and so very helpful. With that said, I'm probably not going to start collecting stamps or this type on postcard, like I said, I focus on local picture postcards. I will eventually sell what I have, but having some idea on what I have, historically and monetarily, will also teach me about a subject I was in the dark about just a few weeks ago.
So far, I've discovered a few cards with some decent value, found out that the thousands of cards glued on paper are basically worthless to some degree, and there are many cards with watermarks (shown under strong light) in the 1873,74 and up, that I have inquired about, but as of now, have not gotten any guidance on. I'm hoping I do, which will be another project of discovery. I've been combing
ebay for "sold" examples, and reading the many posts here in a variety of subjects and it really is a fascinating and complex hobby, and I respect those of you who are dedicated to it. Thanks for all the help and I apologize for my flooding the threads...which I feel I'm being a bit of a pest, Don
