If it's not a buyer immediately flipping/reselling scenario, there are certain auction houses on SAN and elsewhere that just flatly show that EVERY lot sold, even when there were passed lots. Either that or they never post realized prices so you have no way of knowing what sold and what didn't.
I am a collector of pre 1910 worldwide. Buying albums of that period, from auction houses, is my primary source of stock. If it is original and unpicked I have more chance of finding the less common stamps. Once an album has been picked, I look to see if it has been picked of valuable stamps or difficult stamps. I will be more inclined to buy the former
