Good afternoon all, On re-locating a recent Commonwealth collection into mine I came across this example from the Leeward Islands KGVI set. It is the 1/4d brown, and this one has a broken serif at the bottom left of the'' of the value (photo below). There is no mention of this in my 2016 SG Commonwealth catalogue, does anyone have any more detailed references for this issue? Thanks in advance. Regards Davidr

Thanks perf12. This is possibly one of the 'white patches, lines and dots' found on the key plates which are mentioned on the third page of the article. Regards DavidR |

Murray Payne doesn't list any varieties for the farthing - I tend to run a mile from these, so have no personal knowledge! |

Hi DavidR, Could you please tell us if the words LEEWARD ISLANDS are 1.5mm or 1.75mm tall? If the former, then the duty plate is the KGV plate, which was replaced in 1939. |

Hi Bobby De La Rue,
interesting information about the size of the letters in Leeward Islands. I have checked the SG Commenwealth & British Empire catalog but could not find this information in there. What is your source for this type of small, interesting facts?? |

Hi hansthedutchman, The information comes from Robson Lowe's Encyclopedia Vol. 6: Leeward Islands |

Hi Bobby, the letters measure 1.75mm which fits for the stamp issue date of 1940. Thanks Nuc5, but this is a KGVI stamp issued a bit later. Regards DavidR |

Having known Dickon Pollard for more than 30 years, my guess is that if this "flaw" recurred in any consistent way it would be listed in the Commonwealth Cat. That said, it is a very small flaw- Commonwealth tends to list the more eye-popping recurring flaws. Your stamp may fall below the threshold for listing in a Catalog. One way to research this flaw is to find sheets of this issue to see if the flaw is evident on any of the stamps.
Another avenue to pursue would be Dickon himself. He still works for Stanley Gibbons and still remains the foremost active expert in KGVI. |

The difference in the letter height should at least be footnoted in SG, unless perhaps they consider it specialist material? |

Thanks shermae, good info. Not likely to come across sheets of these so will just note it as 'unlisted'. Regards DavidR |
