Was going through some common stamps and came across this. I don't see any damage to the stamp and whatever happened came prior to the cancel. There are parts that look over-inked as well as under-inked. I placed a "normal" one next to it.

I fully agree with the direction Don is taking here. Notice the cancel is also lighter across the forehead, eyes, nose, mouth, chin. Without having it in-person here to look at closely, it points to post-use alteration/damage of some sort, which removed some of both Roosevelt's face and the cancel.
Under a much stronger light, there is slight thinning in the area of the damage. I'm guessing some sort of chemical reaction. What threw me off was the area between the cancel lines is damaged.
I'm recovering from knee replacement and have too much time on my hands.
