Seeking information on this German ship cancel. I collect Finland (but not Germany) and I know that something similar to this cancel was used during on steamship mail between Turku and Sweden (noted in my Facit catalog) and can be found on Finland stamps from about 1912 or so. However, I can't find anything about similar cancels on mail from Germany, but I am much less familiar with Germany. Any thoughts? Does anyone collect these? Thanks in advance for your comments. Cheers!

How was the cancel used on ships between Turku and Sweden? Was it similar to a paquebot cancellation or applied at port in Finland or Sweden?

It could be the case a Finnish or Swedish ship sailed from Germany to Finland or Sweden and had German stamps on board that it cancelled with this canceller, or any ship arriving at Turku or the Swedish port from Germany handed over a letter posted at sea and was cancelled with the cancellation at the port.

All I know is that the ship figure cancels were used onboard ships going from Turku to Mariehamn to Sweden and back again and from a few other Baltic routes from Helsinki etc. I am trying to locate pictures I've seen showing the onboard mail clerks sorting and cancelling mail.

You may be right - the German stamp may be an oddity. A passenger carrying German stamps may have mailed the letter while traveling on one of the mail steamships.

There is a wiki article about this mail route; https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stockholm–Turku_mail_route

Ships, frequently, stocked stamps at a port of call. If a Finnish or Swedish ship was sailing from Germany, it may have had German and not Swedish or Finnish stamps.
