Morning all, looking for a bit of help with a penny black I picked up yesterday at auction. I admit I struggle with plating these but on spotting the flaw on the top of 'P' of postage I thought this must be easy! However the only plate number I can find with reference to this particular flaw is plate 44, obviously not used on the black printings.
There is also some distortion to the 'O' of the check letter, which again I cannot pin down anywhere. Tried to scan but struggling to reduce the size so photos attached. Any assistance most welcome.
Best regards
DavidR

That was my intention NSK, but cannot get the scan reduced to suit the requirements. The image optimiser will not accept the file for some reason.

Crop down to only what you need to show. Pick 72 dpi. Put jpg quality at something less than 100...70 might be fine. Experiment. You can get a lot of detail in a pic under the site limits. I've never (?, almost never?) used the optimizer.

If I'm picking image size, I pick a width of 700-900 to it has a nice size on a screen, without needing to be scrolled.

No doubt, there are better ways to do this, but this has unfailingly worked for me.

As a best guess I'd say it's a plate 1a in a late state. Otherwise a plate 1b.

The O seems particularly well centred, thus eliminating the other plates, at least to me eyes.

Thanks Bobby. I will try again with my image but having to use the iPad to scan with and editing on it doesn't come easily!
