First post, hopefully I get the pictures right.

Picked this up at the stamp club the other night, not a huge deal, but I like it. A couple pairs of R27b on most of a document, Plus a couple very damaged.

The question is about the damage. Am I close in thinking the signature of the borrower was removed as a way of cancelling or invalidating the debt after it was paid off?

Yes. I have seen this before on promissory notes. It was a widespread practice.
