likely refers to anything that doesn't look like a conventional stamp, so some more narrowing down is in order. maybe "meters" (imprinted by meter machine) -- been around since at least 1920s.
Then, the worldwide "ATMs" (forget what the acronym is for (NOT USA's Auto. Teller machine), but worldwide they prefer "ATM", otherwise been known as "Framas", and "APC" (stamps) or "SSK" (stamps) in USA.
Later expanded to "computer vended postage" or CVPs, and so on.
Anyone interested in "non- postage stamp" world can look at Meter Society website, wealth of info.

Variable value stamps cover a wide range, they, very much, are postage stamps.

OP could as well mean machine-cancelled mail.
So, maybe OP could provide an example of what he or she means.

A picture is worth a thousand words.
Without it, we will just be guessing until the original poster comes back with a few sample illustrations and explanation of the significance of the date ranges.
Seems like we had a similar topic recently, although I can't find it.

@boulphi, as John Becker suggested, you might want tp post an example of what you mean.

Meter marks - the marks companies apply to their mail under licence - do not cancel anything. They are single-use proof of (future) payment of postage. Mechanised cancellers do not apply meter marks but cancel stamps to prevent reuse.
