I am using a 365 nm uv light and different stamps of the same year and variety appear different colors under the light does this mean one or the other is counterfeit?

Hi John, and welcome! Is there any way you can post clear pictures of the stamps, and preferable some of the year inscriptions as well ?

As you have found out, taking a picture under 365nm uv light is tricky. Also one of your stamps was soaked off an envelope as it appears used. Soaking can introduce problems - like soaking off the taggant if it is not embedded in the paper.
Your picture is not good, plain and simple. Here is what you can try to improve it:

1. Put a black background on a flat table (your image is irritating as hell as whatever is in the background overexposes your camera.
2. Place your camera right above the stamps (not that angled hipshot), on something that keeps your camera fixed.
3. Shine your uv light from the side onto the stamp, as perpendicular to the stamps as you can.

The glow you see with your eyes often is completely different from the glow your camera sees. That is an inherent problem of those (cheap) ccd chips that are often poor reacting to blue wavelength. It helps to have one or more reference samples on hand.

As drkohler has pointed out, not much can be discerned from your picture. But the stamp on the right appears to be from a coil printed by Ashton Potter, while the stamp on the left is not. So they are not the same variety. There are six major varieties of this design.

Sorry to pile-on a bit, but ..... Nor did you mention the source the stamp on the right. Was it bought at a P.O. or discounted on-line, etc. The answer may be obvious, but the more details you provide, the more accurate the replies can be. And as Peter suggests, a normal hi-res scan may tell just as much.

Any stamp that you purchased that far below face value is guaranteed to be fake.
