I too have miserable eyes, glasses are essential for reading anything and I often need extra magnification to clearly see postmarks and such. I'm also a fan of linen testers for getting a good look at stamps (mine is a 10x). I use a flip-down visor quite often - the brand I use was available in a number of different magnifications, I think mine is around 2.2x. And for checking for plate flaws, I have a digital microscope that is in any case fun to play with on other stuff.

Mystic has pretty good prices on mounts. I buy most of my mounts there.
