This cancel has me intrigued. I see HEARD & CO - is that Augustine Heard & Co out of Hong Kong? Anyone recognize this postmark? Thanks.

That issue was used in China & Japan. The rest of that cancel is "Forwarded By" and then a location at the bottom. I won't be able to access my copy of Forwarding Agents by Rowe until Monday to confirm the city but believe a searchable version is on Leonard Hartmann's website.

Thanks for that hint. Yes, Augustine Heard & Co is listed as a forwarding agent in Hong Kong on that website. In my searching, I'm finding that that company was quite large and very involved in the opium trade. Interesting to read about.

Philately is indebted in a way to the Heard correspondence. It produced a significant number of great covers to and from China/Hong Kong. I've also seen other covers, not specifically addressed to Heard, but that were addressed to individuals that worked for them.
