I was searching through an old collection and discovered some early Japanese stamps. I think this is Japan#2 some strange handwritten on the reverse. Does anyone have any idea what this mean? And is it common on Stamps from early Japan to have this is type of annotation?

It didn't come up in the first post… So I tried it again, and I cannot seem to get the picture to come up. I will try here again.

A stamp notorious for being forged, so I'm looking forward to reading what others have to say

Well… I'm rather surprised… there are 146 views are no substantive opinions

Looking at other copies online, the design shows from the back. Might just be the lighting, but maybe this stamp is still on paper?

One explanation could be that this is a stamp printed during a paper shortage ( war? ).
This type of thing has been found on wartime issues that were printed on the back of maps etc

Aren't these printed on very thin paper, like rice paper?

These stamps need to be expertised as there's so many forgeries around.
