In an attempt to reduce the frequency that experts/true enthusiasts have to read stupid questions, I spent months familiarizing myself with the "basics" before joining a stamp forum/blog and asking ignorant questions. I have recently purchased several substantial stamp collections(totaling in the millions of stamps) each collection I bought was clearly assembled by a committed, serious collector, over a significant period of time. Both the foreign and domestic(U.S.) collections start in the 1800's and run through the 1990's. I have very large and very comprehensive German, Russian, and U.S. collections and each collection includes hundreds, if not thousands, of what most people would consider "valuable" stamps ($50-$100+ each). I've learned just enough to be annoying, but l absorb information quickly, so I don't repeat the same mistake and become intolerable.
Thanks in advance for everyone's patience!

MillionAirmail,

Collecting for the enjoyment of collecting, whatever that might be, is the name of the game. Don't hesitate to ask questions especially if you need basic information and especially more advanced sources of information for any possible topic. You should be able to find folks on this board a little further along on their collecting journey glad to share experiences.

My personal bias is a used stamp loses the story of its journey in the postal service when it is removed from the cover it transported to its destination. Collecting postal history adds a whole new aspect to your journey in our hobby. Sounds like you are a perfect candidate to become a postal history collector?

Wishing you many enjoyable future days in our hobby. Russ
