Hello everyone,

I got QV postal stationary of 2 anna 6 pies , sent from Kodaikanal, tamilnadu in April, 1896 to canada and it has few Postmarks on back side of cover, one light in black and one in red, I guess it reached in approximate 30 days. Would like to to know more about it.

Thank you so much

Hi Hemang,

The post is fine and your scans are excellent

These envelopes were first issued in 1892. Yours has travelled via London.

I wonder if the first part of the journey was on the P&O ship Rome. Tabeart (vol. 2 p.78) says the mails were due in London on 27 April, so the dates fit.

As for the journey from the UK to Canada, hopefully someone can chime in with this information.

Hello Bobby,
Thank you so much for information about it's trip to London, I was able to partially see the red Postmark being London, but I didn't believed as Canada and London both are in different continent so might some other city, but it's London, thank you so much
And other Postmark says 9 May with light letters showing city name, any help would be appreciated

Thank you

I can't make out the name in the 9 May postmark I'm sorry. It looks like a Canadian postmark but I'm not 100% sure.

From the little bit of research I've been doing I think the mails were carried by the Allen Line/Montreal Ocean Steamship Company. They operated from 1854 to 1917.

Red on the London, along with it not being a duplex, is typical when used as a receiver, I believe. The May 9 is likely a transit mark when it came on shore in Canada, so that might help in puzzling out the name, though it could also be a train transit mark.
