I woukd like to know the reason for the postmarks that are not franked on to a stamp. Is the origin Devonport going to Bristol? Would they have been franked on the reverse of an envelope? Does the item have any value?

Thanks for all previous answers and appreciate any help on this one.

Is this just a piece with postmarks, or does this only show part of a cover?

Both are standard date-stamps used in post towns. it is not completely clear, but it looks like the Devonport stamp is dated MY 28. Letters posted and received in post towns were to be stamped with the date-stamp of that town.

If it is MY 28, it appears the letter was posted in Devonport or in a sub-office of that and sent to Bristol where it was delivered.

The stamp franks the item, not the postmark. The stamp would have been obliterated with a Maltese Cross. If this is just a piece with the postmarks, there remains the possibility the cover had not been franked. There was no obligation yet to prepay postage.

Thanks for your help. Yes, the scan is from a piece cut from the original envelope (I assume).
