I have been searching for a US Scott 834 Precancel for 15 years.
I have only seen one but it was sold at an auction.
I have the complete Prexi Precancel set, I am just missing the 834.
Any suggestions on where I might look or ask outside the normal places (IE; ebay, hipstamp) ???
I was a member of the Precancel Society and tried the want ads there also (no luck).

Try an ad in the USSS' The United States Specialist.

Try the ASDA dealer listing for dealers specializing in precancels.
Try the APS dealer listings and find dealers specializing in precancels.

Both list such specialty dealers.

Edited to snip text referencing posted image of 834 precancel and the image--it was a humorous close but no cigar of an Canada 834 precancel.

I would stick with the "normal places". ebay currently shows two sales in recent months with a simple search of "834" & "precancel" and there were likely more with some creative searching.

Add: why not send a message to the seller of those two lots?

I did not copy the items John Becker mentioned as you said to exclude ebay. Here they are now:

They are legitimately scarce, especially if they were made in the original time-frame (most have been made in recent years to satisfy denomination collectors). Expect to pay 50$ +.

I was just thinking, they would be easy to counterfeit. Especially since only "local" precancels legitimately exist. Here's where one of the specialty societies like Precancel Society should have a checklist of known examples, uh, a catalog... I guess they do... to help with at least ruling out clumsy fakes.

Thanks everyone! I do search ebay but I guess I always miss when they are listed, but...I never thought that there could be fakes out there. I will have to find the known cities where the 834 was precanceled to prevent getting a fake one. Showing me the recent ebay sales will help me be more vigilant!
Thanks again!

The PSS (or interested members) have not published a list. The modern ones should not be labelled as fakes because they use real official govmt devics (such as the Basin WY). Maybe better to call them souveniers.

The Basin device was delivered to the local post office in July of 1988.

Melvin was 06Nov1939 so it is possible a contemporary, commercial use. That is as close as you get to figuring it out.
